What filter is best to use with a wide angle lens?
I have a Tokina 12-24mm wide angle lens and I plan on taking a trip where most of my shots will be outdoors, especially the beach. Using a circular polarizer isn’t so good because it will create a dark area in the sky. Is there another filter that I can use that has almost the same effects of the circular polarizer? Will a 81A filter be good for what I'm looking for? Or is there a way to continue using the circular polarizer, just at a different angle, position, etc.?
I would like to achieve to what a circular polarizer is made for, the saturated skies and the reflections taken off from water/metallic surfaces. If it isn’t possible to shoot at a 90 degree angle, would you recommend any other filter?
What are you attempting to achieve? A polariser will make blue skies bluer and cut reflections off water glass etc it will also saturate colours in the frame. But on a 12 mm lense the effect can be uneaven with banding across the sky. To get the best effect from a circular polariser you should shoot at 90 degrees to the sun.
If you are looking to hold back the exposure in the sky then a graduated filter is what you need.
An 81 (ab or c) wil have the effect of warming the entire shot.
If you indicate what you are anting to achieve you wil get a more accurate answer.
