is USM important for a lens with IS?
I got my 450d with the kit lens recently. now I'm looking foward for the second lens which probably mid telephoto lens. currently lookig at EFS 55mm-250mm IS and 70mm-300mm IS USM. just wanna know is it worth it to pay an extra bucks for the USM
USM is Canon's Ultrasonic Motor, which allows for fast and quiet focusing, as well as full-time manual focusing (which lets you manually focus at any time, without having to set the switch to MF).
With zoom lenses, you often get what you pay for. The EF-S 55mm-250 f/4-5.6 is a budget lens complete with plastic Lens Mount, no USM and only costs around US$255. It doesn't produce the sharpest image quality (that's why it's cheap).
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is a better lens overall...a little better optically and in build, has USM, a metal lens mount (that's why it costs more).
However, there are better choices. For example, the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (only slightly more than the EF 70-300mm) or the same lens with IS (a far better lens, but it will set you back at least $500 more than the EF 70-300mm).
Also, have a look at Canon's prime lenses (one focal length). They are excellent optically and faster (constant wide aperture, e.g f/1.8, f/1.4). Making them perfect for portraits and low light shooting.
Just remember, you get what you pay for...
