What should I get for entry-level pro sDLR photo gear?
Here is what I am thinking. I want to do landscapes mainly and perhaps a bit of wildlife.
-Canon EOS 20D or 30D body
-Close lens: zoom 17-55 mm, f/2.8
-Short telephoto lens: 70-200 mm, f/4
-Long lens: 300 mm, f/4
Anything you would get instead? I have a budget of about $5000 USD for body and lenses. All feedback appreciated. Thanks!
Not bad...but check out the 10-22 for landscapes. I would also look for used gear at KEH.com (I buy everything there) and your dollar will go a lot further. I've owned all the lenses you mentioned at one time or another, and they are pretty decent. For third party, Tamron makes some nice stuff, but the build quality is not that great.
If you go for used gear, your kit might look like this (prices are from the KEH web site):
Used 20D $789
10-22mm F 3.5 4.5 $645
70-200 F2.8L $1000 (this is a much better lens than the F4 version - this is the non IS version) - you will love this lens - trust me
300 F4 $950 ( the non IS version is supposedly sharper)
And since at this point you have only spent a bit over $3K, I would add the following:
580 EX flash $350
50mm 1.8 prime $70
100mm F2.8 macro $360
Velbon Sherpa tripod $90
A nice Tamarac or Lowpro bag to carry it all in $100
And I still think you have almost $1000 left which you can send to me or perhaps put in your 400mm F2.8L IS fund...
