Can i use a lens made by one company with a camera made by another?
I have an old Minolta Maxxum 5000i and I suspect that my lens (Maxxum AF Zoom 35-80mm) is broken. I've been looking on Ebay and Amazon for a replacement lens, but can't quite find the exact one for a reasonable price.
Would a 35-80mm lens by Canon or Kodak work the same as a Minolta Maxxum would? I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on an unnecessary product, you know?
Thanks.
Minolta, Canon, Kodak or Nikon lenses are designed to work only on those brands of cameras - each has a unique Lens Mount system. Brands like Tokina, Tamron and Sigma make lenses in different mounts for various camera brands. However, it may be difficult to find one in the Minolta mount. The quality of lenses from these makers has varied over the years, so I would want to test the lens a bit to make sure it works well on your camera. Also check inside the lens by shining a flashlight through the rear while you look through the front for unusual amounts of dust or fogging inside the lens.
Places that carry used lenses include:

Here is a 35-80mm Minolta zoom from Kenmore Camera in Washington state near Seattle. I have dealt with them with used equipment in the past and found them to be a good dealer.

I don't know the Minolta system to know if this lens would work on your camera, but the store could probably tell you.
If you are in or near a large city, you should be able to find a professional camera store (not a consumer chain like Ritz or Wolfe) that carries used cameras and lenses - let them know what you are looking for and one may turn up. An advantage of checking at a store is that the camera and lens work together as a system, and the problem may be with the camera. The camera store may also be able to recommend a shop that can evaluate the lens and let you know if it can be fixed. Given the modest price of the used lens above, it may be cheaper to get a good used lens than fix a broken one.
Good luck!
