Pentax KX Kit Lens question?
I am about to purchase a Pentax KX with a kit lens. The KX without a kit lens is MORE expensive (believe it or not) and I want a second lens to go with the kit lens (18-55m) I don't want to neglect any lenses and I need an opinion on what second lens I should get... I am an avid vacationer and I want to be able to take close up photos of people, as well as landscape and scenery. I don't mind switching lenses, but I DO mind keeping one lense neglected. I want a focal length on or past 200mm...
Opinions?!
Hi Nathan,
Why not go with the two-lens kit?
Pentax K-x with 18-55/3.5-5.6 *AND* 55-300/4.0-5.8:

Here's a review of the 55-300:

Here's a list of telephoto zooms to fit Pentax, sorted by price:

You mentioned landscapes and scenery. Usually that is done with wide angle lenses. The Pentax 12-24 is a great choice for wide angle:

But if $700 is too much for it, you might want to look at the Tamron 10-24 for about $470:

Or the Sigma 10-20, about $480:

You also mentioned closeups of people. The kit 18-55 will be good for that. For portraits you'd normally want something that can throw the background more out of focus, but for vacationing you're more likely to want the background in focus.
Does your avid vacationing include photo opportunities in dim lighting? If so, you might want to get a good tripod. If some of that dim lighting is indoors in places where flash is allowed, I would also suggest getting a strong flash that does both bounce and swivel.
This tiny tripod is rock-solid and will fit in any camera bag. I glued velcro to one of the legs on mine and keep it strapped to my camera neckstrap!

For a bigger starter tripod that's light and compact for travel, and not expensive, you might want to look at this one:

For a powerful flash with bounce (pivots up and down) and swivel (pivots side to side) at a moderate price, this one is popular and highly regarded:

Good luck and have fun!
