Why do I keep screwing up my Holga photos?
I've used four rolls of Kodak Ektar 100 ISO (120 film) in my Holga 120 CFN and have only gotten about 28 photos to turn out. I took it to a local photo lab which I trust but don't understand why only 28 out of 64 have turned out. I have a couple concerns.
1) I didn't tape the back up with duct tape. Is that bad?
2) There have been some weird things going on with the film (it jams sometimes, or things get caught in it when I wind it up)
3) Every time I load new film into it the numbers are upside down in the red box.
Any advice?
I'm not looking exactly to create "quality" photos with the Holga. It's just a plastic toy camera that I thought would be fun for making vintage photos, and the color flash is pretty cool. But I'd just like to be able to get all my pics to at least turn out.
What film should I use, by the way?
I don't know what would be causing the film to jam. But I just wanted to say that using Ektar 100 in a toy "lomography" camera like the Hoga is NOT a good idea! Ektar is a great film and will capture absolutely amazing pictures with beautiful colors...when it's exposed correctly. It's extremely unforgiving with exposure. It's not a film for beginners or if you're just taking snapshots with a toy lomography camera. You really have to try to get it just right. The problem with toy cameras like the Holga is that you really don't have any manual exposure control. So you have to choose the right film for the lighting conditions. Most films are forgivng enough that if you're somewhere around the right exposure, you'll get decent pictures. But Ektar is really picky about exposure. You really need to use a light meter, and use a camera with manual exposure control, where you can adjust the shutter speed and aperture. If you try to use Ektar in a toy lomography camera like the Holga, you're just asking for trouble.
If you really want to try Ektar (and you SHOULD, because it is a beautiful film) then you need to get a real camera with manual exposure control. If you want to use the 120 rolls, then there are tons of great vintage medium format cameras you can get. I'd recommend a Twin Lens Reflex like the Yashica A or maybe even a folding camera. If you want to try the 35mm rolls, then I'd recommend a 35mm SLR or even a vintage rangefinder camera like the Argus C3. My point is, you will be much happier if you use a camera that has manual exposure control. You'll get much better pictures.
To give you an idea of what Ektar 100 looks like if you expose it CORRECTLY, here are some of my pictures I've scanned and uploaded on Flickr. This is a set just for pictures I've taken with Ektar.

The colors really pop, especially red and blue!

EDIT:
For different kind of films to try, look at Freestyle Photo Supplies. They have a ton of different kind of black and white and color films.

Here's a list of some of their 120 color films:

Maybe Portra VC might be a good choice:

Don't get me wrong...Ektar 100 is a great film and it captures beautiful photos. It's one of my favorite color films now. But it's just very picky about exposure, and I think trying to use it in a toy lomography camera is just going to make you frustrated. I think you should use a film that's more forgiving.
