Sony iLink compatibility?
Basically, I was just wondering if Sony's iLink is really just a standard DV Firewire interface.
(Example: would I be able to hook up a Canon or Panasonic camera to a Sony DV Walkman and use it as monitor?)
Second question: are they definition specific? (If I got a HD camera, could I still use a SD DV Walkman?)
I am not exactly clueless in the area, but I've use the same kit, which is all Sony SD, and I was wondering about when I start switching to HD.
IEEE1394 is the Standard name for it. IEEE = Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. 1394 is the number assigned this particular protocol by this standards organization.

Apple calls it firewire. With firewire 400, Apple uses 6-pin connectors. Two of the connectors are for power. Sony calls if i.LINK. Sony uses 4-pin connectors for firewire 400. The two power pins are removed. The actual communications protocal that travels over the wire are the same - Firewire and i.LINK are merely brandnames that Apple and Sony (respectively) use.
Yes, this is the same DV port on miniDV camcorders - and your Walkman.
In your case, if your Walkman does only standard defintion DV-format video, you can connect any miniDV tape based, standard definition, DV format video from any camcorder manufacturer and watch the video on the Walkman.
If you want to connect a high definition, HDV format, camcorder to your Walkman with a firewire cable, you need to have the camcorder send standard definition, DV protocol, video out the DV port to your Walkman (have the camcorder downsample the video signal to DV so the Walkman knows how to deal with it) - OR if your video Walkman can deal with HDV format video (like the Sony GVH-D700), you can send HDV out the DV port to watch in high definition.
BUT, if you want to connect a HDV camcorder and watch HDV on a standard def-only Walkman, that will not work.
