What lens do you recommend for a Canon 450d?
I just took my camera to the shop cos it stopped taking pics, turns out the motor of the kit lens was shot. So now i'm looking for a new lens. Something better than the kit lens, preferably with image stabilizer but not necessarily. Nothing specific like a macro lens, just for general use. What sort of lens do you recommend? something around about $AUD500? Give or take a hundred dollars.

If by general use you mean a walk around lens, the 28-135 IS is not a bad lens. But if you use the 18mm end of your kit lens then 28mm isn't going to be wide enough.
I'm not familiar enough with Australian prices to recommend much more than that, and another kit lens honestly. They aren't horrible lenses, but they aren't top notch either. Was the lens under warranty? You might give Canon a call or email, they've been known to be helpful here in the US, sometimes doing warranty repairs even after the warranty expires.
