hi iam planning to buy a superzoom camera. i am planning to Fujifilm Finepix S100Fs. ?
hi iam planning to buy a superzoom camera with good video recording, i am planning to Fujifilm Finepix S100Fs. i already have a sony dsc-h5 and want to go for a new 1. i have also heard good reviews abt The casio EXILIM Pro EX-F1 . can somebody help me to chose between the two or are there any better 1s
regards
harsha
That is funny, I am asking myself the exact same question.
Below is a rundown of the pros and cons of both cameras I wrote after reading various reviews about them for two days.
I’m sorry to say that my review seems way too positive toward the EX-F1. Basically:
- the Casio does every things and does them bad (bad high speed, bad hi-def video, bad photos, bad magnification, bad wide-angle, bad price‹…). Buy it if you are adventurous.
- the Fuji just does somel things (photo and movies, wide-angle) but it does them better (passable photos especially in RAW after correcting chromatic aberration, good movies, fair price).
But there is also a *third* option. Be sure to read the bottom of my answer to discover what it is.
== What they have in common ==
- pre-record photo mode (Casio: 30 photos, confirmed no flash; Fuji: 7 photos, probably no flash)
- RAW (Casio offer DNG RAW, which is even better)
- tripod mount
- zoom ring (confirmed electric for Casio, maybe electric for Fuji - electric is not great for zooming)
- pop-up flash (slow-sync mode available for Fuji, not for Casio). An additional, less powerful “LED flash” is also present in the Casio for high speed (more than 7 fps) shooting. Confirmed no flash button for manual pop-up for Casio. Unknown for Fuji.
- hot-shoe (confirmed dumb for Fuji, probably dumb for Casio - dumb means “doesn’t allow communication between camera and flash”)
- LCD (fold-out for Fuji, which makes it useful for viewing or taking shots at weird angles [e.g. periscope-like]; Casio’s is not only not fold-out but also too bright under sunlight)
- SD (and others I don’t care)
- Heavy chromatic aberration (particularly the Fuji)
http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/camera/review/168/page_4.html
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilms100fs/page18.asp
- Double image stabilisation (Fuji: confirmed electronic-only in video; Casio: unknown type in both photo and video)
- no sub-100 ISO (Sub-100 ISO is useful when you really need to avoid noise)
- remote control (standard for Fuji, optional for Casio. Also, Casio’s is wired [unknown for Fuji])
== Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1 ==
6MP, 12X, ISO 1600 Max
- Video
- pre-record video after firmware update
- separate movie button
- external mike port (a rarity)
- internal stereo mike
- HD movies (beware: 1080i, not 1080p). No zooming with the zoom ring in this mode
- high-speed/slow-motion (up to 1200 fps at reduced resolution). No sound or zoom/exposure/focus change in this mode
- possibility to take a photo DURING video (like Powershot S5’s MovieSnap, without the limitations of this one)
- it seems video can’t be read straight from QuickTime!
- max 29 mn of video in Europe (tax reason: starting from 30 minutes, it would be classified as a camcorder, which is more heavily taxed). Try to buy it out of EU.http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-271-3249-78.html
- video quality is below an AVCHD-style camcorder (but we are talking camcordee here, that is why I do not mark it as a bad point). But better picture than any camcorder (again, this is normal—just to put things in perspective). Apple and oranges, but it is better to say it anyway.
- no face detection (an acceptable shortcoming, if you ask me)
So, this camera does not allow zooming with advanced movie mode. But it stills allows it with regular movie mode, which is usually not even possible with other cameras. That should put the limitations on zooming in perspective.
- Photo
- burst shooting (up to 60 fps, 60 shoots limit whatever the fps)
- max shutter speed is 4 seconds (not enough for good low-light)
- face detection
- low-light unfriendly:
- bad picture quality above 400 ISO (http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Casio-EXILIM-EX-F1-Digital-Camera-Review-18683/TestingPerformance.htm)
- hard to setup in low-light
- multipurpose zoom ring: zoom, bracketing, fps…
- magnesium alloy body
- no movable part
- no wide-angle (36 mm is NOT wide-angle!)
- low startup time (3 seconds with the newest firmware, 4 seconds without it)
- slow electronic viewfinder. A moving target would be blurry (on the EVF, not on the shot)
- focus problems: slow and locks the first target in burst ou video modes
- software ergonomy leavers room for improvement
- price is very high: 999 $
== Fujifilm FinePix F100fs ==
12MP, 14X, ISO 10000 Max
- good image quality, on par with entry-level dSLR. Except for…
- …awful chromatic aberration. Tthis alone should make you think twice before acquiring this camera.
- max shutter speed is more than 4 seconds (good low-light)
Side note: a great deal of superzooms today ventures into the 18x realm and the champion Olympus SP-570 UZ tops at 20x.
== The famous third option ==
This is the four-letter word (no, not this one).
WAIT
- the EX-F1 is a first shoot. The next version will certainly correct a lot of things
- there are several rumours about dSLR with movie-mode. An easy check: http://www.google.fr/search?q=DSLR+movie and a rumour about the Nikon D90: http://www.ipernity.com/blog/19240/82790
