Common Eye Health Conditions
1. Short-sightedness or Myopia
People who suffer from high degree myopia face vision difficulties and even the possibility of sight loss in some cases. While most cases of near-sightedness are mild or moderate, those which are above 6.0 dioptres are considered chronic and degenerative. 2. Cataracts
Cataracts are common for those who are in their senior ages but it can also affect anyone from any age group. When one has a cataract, the lens in the eyes are clouded that it causes dimmed or blurred vision or even total blindness. There are studies which indicate that over-exposure to the sun's UV rays can increase the risk of having cataracts. Aside from aging, other causes can be eye injuries, prolonged illnesses or diseases like diabetes, and even some drugs. Treatment can be done through surgery where the eyes lens are removed and changed with plastic ones.
3. Glaucoma
This disease is caused by optic nerve damage and can creep up on us without us noticing symptoms. It is considered as the second leading cause of eyesight loss and is also known to be the silent thief of the eyesight as it is usually detected in its late stages. Regular eye tests can help monitor if your eyes are at the risk of having glaucoma. Eyedrops and oral medication may be taken to treat glaucoma if prescribed by an eye doctor. However, surgery can be an option if any of the other treatments do not work.
4. Diabetic retinopathy
This eye disease occurs if diabetes damages the retinal blood vessels. Early stage of diabetic retinopathy can cause macula edema or swelling that reduces vision. If the problem persists, then a person who suffers from this condition can have eye floaters or sight spots which also decreases vision. Diabetics can prevent this disease by making their blood sugar levels stable and by maintaining regular exercise and eye tests.
