How long will it take for my aquarium filter to mature and have a crystal clear water in my aquarium?
I just set up a new filter in my aquarium. I was told that the water normally becomes cloudy at first then clears up as the balance of bacteria stabilizes as the filter matures (or develop beneficial aerobic bacteria). It's 4 days now and the water is still cloudy. Is this normal? Please advise me on proper setting up of filters.
Newly setup tank will be cloudy during the first day or two. As the filter filters out the floating debris the water will clear.
Then during the second stage of the cycling process, your water will turn milky white in color. This is an indication of formation of beneficial bacteria colony.
Once the beneficial bacteria colony has established in your tank, you water will again be crystal clear.
This process could take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks or even longer depending on the size of the tank and many other things.
